SynopsisMolly (Vinessa Shaw) has a secret. Although her husband Joel (Patrick Burleigh) died in an unfortunate auto accident a year ago she still sees him everywhere and tries in vain to photograph him. She goes to work each day at the local camera store run by the loquacious Jody (Amy Van Nostrand), and still dines regularly with her Mom (Marsha Mason), Dad (Edward Herrmann), and teenaged sister, Louise (Ari Graynor). Secretly, however, her lingering despair over Joel’s death is beginning to seep through the cracks of her façade. She has an irrepressible urge to shop lift. And she walks - everywhere. Though Louise notices Molly’s strange behavior any mention of it violates the family taboo against discussing topics as personal as grief or depression. Her fascination with the aberrant and unconventional leads her into a relationship with a puckish trailer dweller named Dennis (Tim Blake Nelson). Dennis’ dopey shenanigans have a strange appeal to Molly. She is especially drawn to his brazen house invasions of absent neighbors. Through her friendship with Dennis she meets the charismatic Happy (Tim Daly), Dennis’ uncle. Happy catalyzes the unraveling of her fragile world. What begins as innocent hijinks at a local quarry ends at the vacant home of the elderly neighbor responsible for Joel’s death where the hijinks turn violent and Molly experiences her last hallucination of Joel. She begs him to release her. Molly’s transformation to a woman fully connected to her family and community occurs not without pain but through a series of random and often comedic events. |
